Ghana's agrofood & plastprintpack technology imports grow by double digits

After the great sucess of agrofood West Africa 2022 in Ghana, the 2023 edition is now coming up as agrofood Ghana to take place from 21 to 23 November 2023 at the Trade Center Arena at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This important business platform for the Ghanaian industry is organised by fairtrade in cooperation with their local partner Geovision.

The rebranding from agrofood West Africa to agrofood Ghana reflects the growing importance of the Ghanaian market since the inaugural event in Ghana in 2013.  The figures below in the section “The Ghanaian agrofood market” prove this impressively.

In addition to the 6th agrofood Ghana, fairtrade in West Africa serves Nigeria with the 9th agrofood Nigeria. And francophone West Africa will finally meet again in 2024 in Abidjan, at the 2nd agrofood West Africa.

3-day conference program

agrofood & plastprintpack Ghana 2023 will again be supplemented by a 3-day program full of presentations and conferences, just as in 2022.

Country pavilions in 2023 from
Italy, The Netherlands and South Africa

Italian Pavilion

The Italian Trade Agency ITA in cooperation with AMAPLAST, UCIMA, ASSOFOODTEC and ACIMGA organises the second Collective Participation of Italian companies at plastprintpack & agrofood Ghana in 2023.

Why participate

Ghana, like most countries in the region, is in a phase of strong local industry development, for which there is a need to increase the technological endowment of companies. As an example, from 2017 to 2021, imports of machinery increased as follows:

  • Plastic processing technologies: from €23 million to €47 million, an annual increase of 19.6 per cent
  • Food processing technology: from 59 to 112 million euros, an annual increase of 17%.
  • Packaging and bottling technologies: from 30 to 64 million euros, an annual increase of 21%.

Agro-industrial production currently accounts for about half of the country's exports. However, it is believed that there is ample room for increase, also in light of the numerous government initiatives to support the sector, with the aim of bringing production up to the standards of more mature markets in terms of packaging, traceability and quality.

The plastprintpack & agrofood Ghana exhibition is the country's main event dedicated to the entire agro-industrial chain. An Italian Pavilion that includes technologies for the entire production process thus presents itself as a 'one-stop-shop' for local customers, simplifying investment decisions.

Participation in the fair will therefore enable Italian companies to seize export opportunities arising from this development trend of the local industry, in order to build a solid market share in the area as of now.

Participation fee:

€ 150 + VAT/sqm, with minimum module of 9 sqm - € 1,350 + VAT

First 9 sq.m. FREE for companies benefiting from the support measures for companies in the flooded areas (see paragraph "Application modalities").

The Netherlands Pavilion

The Netherlands Pavilion is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and GNBCC - Ghana Netherlands Business & Culture Council

South Africa Pavilion

South Africa joins in for the 2023 event with a Trade & Investment KwaZulu Natal Pavilion.

Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (TIKZN) is a South African trade and inward investment promotion agency, established to promote the province of KwaZulu-Natal as an investment destination and to facilitate trade by assisting local companies’ access international markets.

Internationally, the Department of Trade & Investment promotes the country as an investment destination, whereas Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal presents a seamless trade and inward investment promotion for, specifically, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Ghanaian agrofood & plastprintpack market

Food & beverage technology: From €59 million in 2017 to €112 million in 2021, Ghana’s imports of food & beverage technology show an annual increase of 17% between 2017 and 2021. (VDMA)

Packaging technology: Ghanaian imports of packaging technology amounted to €64 million in 2021, up 21% annually from €30 million in 2017 - steady growth even in the Corona year 2021. (VDMA)

Food & beverage ingredients: With already well over 40 million inhabitants (2022), which according to the World Bank will rise to 80 million by 2050, Ghana is a huge food market. Expenditure in the F&B sector is growing steadily, and F&B production is by far the largest segment of the Ghanaian processing industry. Accordingly, the demand for food and beverage ingredients is rising continuously.

Food trade with West Africa: According to the World Trade Organization WTO, West African food imports have reached around US$19 billion and exports US$21 billion in 2021. Thus, food trade with West Africa is a US$40 billion business.

  • Ms Daniela d`Orlandi

Italian Ambassador to Ghana and Togo

We are proud to bring to this important exhibition a large and qualified delegation of 20 Italian manufacturers of machinery and products for the plastic, the printing, the packaging and the agribusiness industries. We are sure their presence in Accra will allow Ghanaian companies to learn more about the possibilities Italy can offer to upgrade local production, allowing it, on the one hand, to better respond to the increasingly sophisticated domestic demand, and, on the other hand, to address foreign markets with more added value products.

The Italian Pavilion at plastprintpack and agrofood West Africa represents a major step, that we are taking along with the Italian industrial Association UCIMA, AMAPLAST, ACIMGA and AssoFoodTech. Let me also underline that the Italian Pavillion is organized under the auspices of the City of Rome that is candidate to host the 2030 World Exposition. We look forward to meeting you at our Pavilion to discuss the opportunities that the Ghanaian markets offers to us all!
